Portfolio

Images above are my latest portfolio that I sent to one of design company in Tokyo today. As always, I was working on it quite last minute, and it end up biking in the strong rain, and went to post office. I know I shouldn't work last minute, but I usually work as long as I have time to use.. Now, I'm quite tired to do job hunting, it's tough because I have no idea when I can finish, it's like a marathon without gole line.. damn.

This time I created A4 size, small format portfolio, used thick rough board called "Earth Board" as a cover, and printed my logo using thinner transfer techniques. So far I like what I did. But it's a little bit sad that creating one thing spending long time and had to send it right away, and it won't come back. I feel like a father, whose just-born female baby, get married and leaving the house... well, maybe not.. Haha.

And today, I received some prizes from the Cut&Paste event! Which are Intuos4 pen tablet and Pantone® color charts. I'm so happy! But actually pen tablet is much bigger than I thought and it is impossible to use it with my tiny desk...hmm.. Maybe those cool design items indicate me to "find a cool job and live nice house where you can have big table..", something like that, is that right, my god? Haha. Pantone® color chart one is also pretty useful I thought, especially displayed CMYK numbers next to the each color, would help printing process a lot. Anyway, I guess I have to keep working on job hunting...to use those stuff for good purpose!

Max Huber

--------------------

Recently I visited Tokyo for an interview of job hunting. It was pretty sudden happening, so I worked all night and created my latest portfolio. But it was actually lucky happening, because that company's apply deadline has already ended, however they saw my design website and this blog, and called me! It made me really happy and I'm glad that now I have this blog. It's actually fun to write now. I feel like I'm publishing small personal design magazine. One bad thing using this blogger is kinda difficult to receive comments, since not much Japanese user have Google account. Well, if you are reader of my blog and also having a Google account, feel free to leave your comments, anytime! (I also figured out that people can create Google account, even though they don't have Google email address. Please go Sign in button from Google top page and create account if you are interested in.)

Anyway, today's topic is Swiss graphic designer, Max Huber(1919-92). When I went to Tokyo, I visited ggg (Ginza Graphic Gallery) and saw his exhibit. It was beautiful exhibit. Even though his designs are old, it looks not old at all. I think his choice of nice typefaces and limited colors made them look modern even now. Especially i liked his collaboration works with Jazz Artists, his style matched well with Jazzy atmosphere. I didn't expect that I can go this exhibition, but I'm happy that I could go and check it. I especially liked golf design image above.

This show will be closed on June 29th, which is actually tomorrow, but if you are living in Tokyo and interested in, it's graphic designer's one of must-watch show, I think. However, now Japanese magazine, Idea, has special feature about Max Huber, so if you are tough to go, that's the alternative plan for you.

Immortal Glory of Michael Jackson

Justin Timberlakeが「We have lost a genius and a true ambassador of not only Pop music but of all music.」 Ambassador(大使、使節)って言葉が合ってると思う。
[Michael Jackson Official Homepage]

--------------------

I can't believe that Michael Jackson passed away, which is really sad. Since I started dancing he have been one of my hero, of course we tried Moon Walk steps just like other teenage boys around the world did. I was wondering about his final concert, supposed to be hold next month, so I'm sorry that no one is able to see it. Because of this tragedy, I've been watching his videos on YouTube for few hours today. haha, maybe bit too much. I'm not sure about his recent activities, however, his old days singing and dancing is still awesome even today. I just love to see his Moon Walk, I think still nobody can do that as damn good as he did.

Upper video is from his concert. Extremely excited audience and their smile makes me think that MJ brought happiness across the world by his performance. Lower video is from his official webite and it's a video of interview with Will I Am, Akon, Beyonce, Pharrel Williams, Mary J. Blige, Omarion and so on. It proves Michael greatly affects present music scenes. No matter their race, gender, or generation, people thought he is "cool". That's amazing achievement.

Justin Timberlake said, "We have lost a genius and a true ambassador of not only Pop music but of all music." I agree with his opinion. I pray his soul may rest in peace.

Triangle Magic

I feel like triangle has some kind of special power. I know it sounds weird and religious, but I still think triangle is special one, not rectangle or any other geometrical shapes have this quality. Maybe it's because triangle has minimum number of sides, or acute angles. Maybe. This time I experimentally composed using equilateral triangles and its rounded cornered versions. For some color compositions, I started to think they're like sneaker design, so I used fewer color and tried to make street fashion like color combination. I didn't spend much time, but they came out better than I thought, I guess it's because triangle magic. haha

Jogging, Weisky, Carbonara.

Today was really long day. Woke up at 9am, and now is about 5:30... My body is kinda crazy now. I don't know when myself get sleepy... I'm gonna be vampire someday, maybe..haha

This is my day: I jogged this morning, that I haven't done for ages. It was really tough and made my ribs hurts a bit, but also feeling great. Wake up early, jogging with listening fav songs, and morning coffee are awesome! I always know that, but I've rarely done. After that I and my sister bought a little high-class whiskey as a Farther's day's gift. And after that I made carbonara spaghetti dinner for my family. Which is really unusual. The taste was good, at least for me. I'm really interested in cooking lately, so I will show you better cooking photo next time. I wanna make many kinds of pasta, if I can. And after that, I was working on my tracing map image, which is my new job project. Tracing is boring, but I figured out and did tracing and watching SouthPark at the same time. haha. It worked. when I have to work on something that is full of repetition, maybe watching movie or doing some another stuff at the same time would be good idea.

Gimmi Your F**kin' Money.

Today, I was drawing landscape illustration, something like houses and trees. But, I couldn't do nice job for that. And I realized that is because I have almost never drawn landscape illustrations, even though I have drawn millions of human or creatures. So I think it's time to learn how to draw cool landscape illustrations. It's added to my 2009 to do list. haha. And also today I realized I'm not good at drawing human body shape. It's because I usually avoided to draw human from diagonal angles, so I will start learning, some point this year.

At 3 am, I was really stacked what I was working on, and I drifted away.. and I drew illustration above using Sharpie. This time I edited using Photoshop and created design for T-shirts. I hope sentence is fine for native speakers... or is it too aggressive? I created two variations, and I like colorful one better. Somehow it makes me hungry and now I want to eat hamburger. haha.

The Art of Title Sequence

True Blood

Delicatessen

Stranger than Fiction

The Island of Dr. Moreau

Load of War

[The Art of Title Sequence]
--------------------------------------

I was not familiar about Title Sequence for movie, until I studied about it at CCA, California college of the Arts. Before that I was just thinking, it's almost as same as Trailer, but it was wrong. I think Trailer is an advertisement purpose, and it's a 'collage' of nice scenes, but against this, Title Sequence is a 'Teasing' movie, to make us 'expect'. So now I think Title Sequence has different beauty, compared to film itself, and I really like to see them.By the way I was surprised that many of movie makers are not making title sequences, but offering it to another motion graphic maker. I don't think it usually happens in Japan.

And another reason why I like Title Sequence, is there are Typography. Of course 'Title' needs type, but I don't mean that. I just love to see how type changes atmosphere, how they move, and how they are composed in the moving graphic. That's fun too see, and also I can learn a lot about design.

So today, I introduce this site called The Art of Title Sequence. It doesn't have massive amount of videos, but they picked nice ones, and we can see free high definition movies. Images above are my favorite Title Sequences. Click to go to links.

Cinema 4D

I tried to use Cinema 4D software today. It's a demo version, so I can't save data, but fully functional one, so it's pretty cool. I thought it' much easier than Maya, for me and graphic quality seems even better. I'm begginer of 3D designs so, I'm not sure yet, but I might purchase this one in the future. I made spheres and geometrical shapes. I watched video tutorial from the website called Gray Scale Gorilla and followed his direction, it was fun. But... I'm struggling my main college project, so maybe it wasn't a time to do this kind of fun study...? haha.

Indian Cigarette Package

I bought this Indian cigarette package at miscellaneous goods store at Kakuouzan, Nagoya. That goods store itself was mainly selling bunch of hippie-like trippy graphical stuff and they weren't so attractive for me. But when I tried to leave the store, I found this awesome package. Cheap printing with bright colors, misaligned impressions, Hindu type that I can't read at all, and face of stranger, I love them! It's such a awesome graphic for me. I'm happy to find it. Image above is a both side of the package that I scaned, I don't know which one is front and which one is back, however I like the right one. By the way, it was just 105yen. (US$1)

Yoh Nagao Exhibition & Live Painting

Today, I went to the gallery and sofa store, NOyes, located in near Tsurumai park, Nagoya. That space was quite spacious, and clean nice atmosphere, and his paintings matched well. Visitors also had nice fashionable look, and creating cool atmosphere. It was fun to see his live painting, because his work is so colorful, and he usually paint very bright colors on the very bright background. His big size black and white posters, that he designed for his new zine, were also marvelous. So, because of this exhibition, now I feel like drawing using my acrylic paints and paper. - This exhibit is open until 28th of this month, so please visit if you have chance!

Logan: "A Volta"

[Logan: "A Volta"]

Short film I found today, "A Volta" this is directed by Logan, movie maker located in Santa Monica. Crazy Film. South American direct Spanish, Violence and Sexual contents with Hip-Hop sounds, it a little reminds me "City of God" film, but characters are kinda cute. Well, hard to describe, it's kinda mysterious work. Camera movement is especially interesting, it's smooth, but so quick, so we can't take our eyes off of it. Creator said "to keep the viewer occupied", and i think he succeeded. Interesting ideas, and contents. I like it.

Maya, 3D Graphics

Omg, I did it again. I supposed to slept 6 hours ago... Now is 6:00am, I haven't slept yet. and now I'm getting sleepy, even though, it's morning... It's because of I was watching SouthPark movies in the midnight, and after that, somehow I start downloaded Maya, which is a 3D software and experimenting all night long... I should sleep early, toight.

Well, but experimenting Maya, was interesting. Fortunately I could use it more than I thought. English version of Maya was Greek to me, but video tutorials helped me a lot. This time I made two graphics, one is type exploration work, "QUIRK", another one is my business card kind of graphic. I used both Photoshop & Maya. I realized that so many things are only possible when I use 3D software, such as lights, camera moves and material options. Maybe I should seriously learn how to use it, even if I'm gonna work only 2D jobs. And recently I'm working with 3D space, using After Effects, so I would like to export 3d objects and move them on After Effects next time.

Momo-Man

I went to Gyoza-no-Osho, Chinese restaurant after school today, with my media major classmates. They were really yum, so I had fun. Thank you for inviting! I think Chinese foods are tasty anywhere in the world, but not Japanese or other countries' foods. Ran, who wears Sesami Street T-shirt and I somehow ordered "Momo-man" which is a Peach shaped bean-paste bun. It was really cute looking so we were surprised. haha. But taste wasn't so special, it was normal.

Recently I realized there are not so much reasons to go to my art university, because there are no good printer or scanner, and slow Internet connection speed. So usually I can work better condition in my room. But still I like to meet my friends, and I can focus more, if it's not my room... so I'm kinda struggling finding the best space to work. And worst thing is the professors. Two professors are just so boring. I have to go to weekly critique, however it's just like they are saying their very personal opinions that doesn't help us at all. I miss SF and CCA, it was busy, but it was place where I can really learn. Currently I'm quite struggling my own creative works...

By the way, image below is a Google logo, I found few days ago. Customized logo is usually cheesy, and I already used to it, but this one is worst, I guess. I didn't know what kind of day was that, (maybe Tetoris day?) It's too tough to read and not Google at all...

Cool Vids

[Laforet 2008 Invader Video]

Cool Vids that I recently found from the Internet. First one (image above) is advertisement movie for Laforet Harajyuku, which is a fashion building located in Harajyuku, Tokyo. It was open to the public last year, 2008. Using invader image with primary colors would be cheesy looking, however, I think Caviar, company which directed it, did a great job. For me, it's quite fashionable, and nicely composed, for both timeline and space. Here is the link to the Movie [Laforet 2008 Invader Video]

Another video today is Music Video for "1,2,3" by APOGEE. (image below) Directer is Yusuke Tanaka, he is also Caviar's creator. This is so weird, and Creepy, but I liked it. Because it's funny! I feel like it's just director's favorite taste of video, however it's fun to watch and it means cool, isn't it?

I also found the site called [Tokyo Video Magazine], where you can watch bunch of Japanese Music Videos from picked young directors. So if you have time to kill, go to link from last sentence.

Gif Animation 2 - Dancing Chicken

Somehow I edited this movie, the chicken man and train view video. I don't know why I did it. haha, maybe not so fun as I expected.

Gif Animation 1 - Emily

Emily Gif animation

I was animating my friend Emily, just first experiment of creating her band's music clip, but somehow it gone strange and ended up with quite funny image. haha. And today I found how to export using Gif animation format, so I uploaded it. I like this lough movement, less flames movement and texture, it makes me feel like printing on news print or using 8mm film video camera.

Now there are so many ways to create clean animation, including flash, and after effects motions, however Gif animations might not extinct in the future, just like zines. How do you think? (FYI: This movie is 15 frames per second, it's about half as TV channel.)

Yoh Nagao's Artwork

My Hand after Painting

Kanako-Dog in front of Yoh's Painting

Kanako's Restroom

Yesterday, Kanako, my classmate and I went to my friend Yoh's atelier, and we helped his creations for his 2nd one-man exhibition. We painted a lot of cut out cardboard geometrical shapes, and it was quite fun time. It reminded us preparing high school festival. Now I feel like I should draw illustration using acrylic colors, instead of Photoshop or Illustrator software, there are big difference and it's never be the same, I think. Yoh Nagao, is an awesome painting artist who already had a lot of exhibition experiences around the world. This time he collaborate with Nagoya's popular radio channel, zip-FM and going to hold exhibition with sofa gallery from June 12th to June 28th. So please visit, if you are interested in, and living near Nagoya, Japan. Details are here [Sofa 100% NOyes]

So, we stayed and painted at his atelier until 3am, and I stayed overnight at Kanako's house. We read literary "bunch" of her design magazines and discussed about graphic and companies where we want to do job hunting. That's what we always do, and It was fun time. Design is never be easy and it's always tough, but that's why we are fascinated, and not get tired of it.

The last photo is actually Kanako's restroom. I know it's hard to believe, but it is. And it's freakin' cool and I loved it, so I took the photo without telling her. haha ;P All of my friend's houses were quite fashionable and really designer-like organized space, and not like mine at all. So now I decided to clean my room, within this week!

Awesome Trippy Animation

BIRDY NAM NAM - THE PARACHUTE ENDING from Steve Scott on Vimeo.

Cool, Retro-Future Trippy film that I found today. I have no idea about story, but I love it! :P It's hilarious! I'm happy to find that someone is still working with this kind of old looking, retro style. Probably with old techniques. Now I feel like watching 80's Japanese cartoons. haha

By the way, today was my day off so I had quite nice relax day with Emily. We went to Starbucks, supposed to discuss about my next motion graphics project for their band, Belles&Whistles, but it was more like chil-lax day. Since I'm mainly staying my room most of the day, today was nice refresh day for me. Basking in the sun feels so good.
And somehow the fried chicken we bought at the convenient store, Lawson, was so juicy and delicious, reminded me KFC in the U.S. Oh, I miss junky foods there. Lately, time flew really quickly.

Photo is just a study of taking backlight photo, I tried to make the photo looks artist, ans having nice atmosphere. It was tough more than I expected. So I need to learn before start shooting film.

View from the Train

View from the Train from Kenichi on Vimeo.

Well, I know that most of movie creators tried to create similar stuff, and it may not so original. However I enjoyed creating this experimental work, and I was happy when I see the result. This is five minutes of view from bullet train, just before arriving Tokyo station. I was just shooting outside from my window seat, and put four of them together using After Effects. I didn't edit it at all, just a little bit of color collection. I think it's beauty of coincidence.

HECQ

Since I started motion graphics, I'm interested in ambient music creators and started searching little by little. I usually listening relax, café-like sounds, however if it's background music of some motion graphics, I prefer "edgy' sounds. I found this artist, Hecq through motion graphics, which I put links below. His sounds are so magnificent, but also nicely-edgy digital bass tones. I don't know so much about this kind of sounds, so if someone have recommend stuff, please let me know ;) And one of the links below, "Flash on the Beach" is one of my favorite works, it's really beautiful type work.

SF Shorts

SF Shorts from Kenichi on Vimeo.

This is my past motion graphics project, that I created when I was attending U.S. college, California College of the Arts. It was dummy film for San Francisco short film festival, so I used popcorn, but it seemed like I did whatever I liked. haha. Currently I have new motion graphic project for my friend's band "Belles & Whistles" so probably I use similar way to create music video for them. Hope it will work well.

Original Typefaces 2

Orignal typeface project, volume two. I especially like the top one with extremely curvy shapes. I'm planning to create entire typeface with that kind of design.

Calender Design

Calender design that I created as a part of my job hunting for Nippon Design Center. I created them mainly using old typefaces that I found on type specimen books, not digital faces.
But unfortunately I failed the job exam, maybe this company was too "clean" for me since I kinda like messy designs. haha But it was sad, especially because I just met cool staff working at this company.
