Our dance team "Hikaps" will have a show at college festival! My college, "Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music" have a college festival on this weekend, through Friday to Sunday, and we will dance on the final day, November 1st, from 6pm. I used to dance quite seriously, but haven't done for more than two years. Therefore, it was hard to remember new choreographies, but it will be fun stage, so if you have time, please come and check out our moves! (Our campus is located near the Linimo station called "Geidai-dori, you can transfer to Linimo from Fujigaoka station.)

This college festival, called "Geisai" is actually quite weird one. Maybe it's because of the location, our art college is located on the top of mountain and having too much nature, I mean country side atmosphere... haha I mean, it's really "unusual". We serve alcoholic liquors and the festival is opened almost all night, so I bet you can enjoy this funny atmosphere. We also have a lot of original food shops, so don't worry if you were hungry wolf. I will also help few shops, and maybe I can give you a discount, so please let me know in case of you are there. (By the way, image on the top is our team's poster and T-shirts I just finished designing!)

Makeshift - Artworks by Pascal Tremblay

I love this designer's artworks. His name is Pascal Tremblay, graphic designer from Canada. His type treatment has special atmosphere and compositions are excellent. His works reminded me David Carson's Ray Gun magazine, however Pascal's ones are more elegant, though both of them using rough types. You can see more works from his website called Makeshift

Thesis + International Design Colleges

------------------------------

Recently, I'm requesting college catalogs from the U.S. private art colleges, and the image above is from Otis Art Institute in L.A. I'm not planning to go to the U.S. right now, but still that is a good sauce of graphic design, and I can see what's going on there (without paying any fee!) haha. Catalog is really fun, because usually they hired good graphic designer to make experimental one, because it have to be attractive for prospective students. And of course chosen student works are good to see. I think other countries' colleges are higher level, compared to Japanese ones.

By the way, I finally decided theme and started research about my thesis projects. This time I will create information graphics about "Japan", basically I'll compare Japan and other countries, and indicate interesting points and bad points, and tell audience using motion graphics, and book format. That sounds kinda "academic", but it'll be more like "sarcastic", so I hop you can enjoy and learn something through my final piece.

Yesterday, I was browsing some of the U.S. colleges' student works as a reference, and found some pretty cool pages, so I attached links below. If you are design people, may be they are good sauce for you. I think their level are way higher than my college here in Japan...

Live Market Report

Emily & me at our messy booth

Last weekends, we had Live Market @Yaba Park, located in front of Loft, Sakae. It was actually tough to prepare, since we haven't had much time to prepare, but, of course we enjoyed heaps!! For those who visited and/or bought some of our art works, thank you so much! I was so happy to meet a lot of new people and talk about design and arts ;)

That event itself wasn't as big as I expected, however, location was perfect. Because of it was in Sakae, variety of people visited our booth, including high school students who were just hanging out or shopping, and there were also many kind of artists. I had fresh feeling because not everybody is interested in arts or designs, so it was good to see their natural reactions. This time I picked certain type of my designs, which is my current favorite style, therefore, my works were not interested in for majority of Japanese people, but, because of that, I was able to meet someone who really liked my style. It was interesting discovery for me. And because of that, I was able to think deeply about "living as an artist", and "selling my pieces" from different point of view.

Everyone has different tastes, of course. Favorite clothes, favorite colors, favorite songs, favorite paintings, and favorite atmospheres. And they never match completely with someone's. But, some of my points matched with someone's, and they think "I want to buy this one." I can meet cool artists, and talk to them, because of I "create" something. It is simple, but I think this is so beautiful thing. And I noticed that I'm happy to live in this kind of field.

Little dance off at night...

One of the high school kid looked at my latest zine, and she was happily shouting "This is Rad! I Love it!" and she bought some of my stuff. I clearly remember that scene, because her attitude was just like when I found something really cool and new design, or when I get really excited. I felt sympathy for her, and so happy about someone can feel like that through my design works.

Another woman was talking with her friend, and saying, "I like this card, but I think this one is better to put on my room..." and she bought one card. I usually store cards in my card file, and use as a reference, so her idea was actually fresh for me, and made me happy to imagine her room, with my card as a part of the room. :P

Emily's works are also sold well, and it was definitely fun to work with somebody. Good to meet each other's friends, chil-lax with coffee and beers, and talk to customers. I was wondering, "if I opened the design or antique goods store, it would be like this?" It must be fun. Even though I know I gonna be broke pretty quickly. haha. Maybe I'm not good person to do that... Well, I hope I can make my booth again, at some event, before going to Tokyo. I think it is important to sell hand to hand, talking with them, and see people's reaction directly. Again, thanks for coming! ;P

------------------------------

ps.

ps. For those who came to buy at the lunch time, when I wasn't there, and if you guys are reading my blog, I have to thank you! Actually when I wasn't there, there was biggest sales.... haha, so I was sad that I couldn't talk to you guys. If you have any comment or whatever want to ask me, feel free to gimmi a shout! Live Market!

------------------------------

Tomorrow and day after tomorrow, Emily and I have an small art shop as a part of Live Market event. It is hold at Yaba-park, located in Sakae, in front of LOFT building. So if you like artsy stuff, there are a lot more booths and I'm sure you can have fun!
We created badges, Zines, T-shirts and postcards for this event, and I actually have to work a lot more tonight... I hope I can sleep a bit...

Images are from my new Zine project, this time I used collage techniques to create zines, hope you like them. Live market is open from 10 am and closed at 8 pm. I hope tomorrow won't be raining cat's and dogs day! All right, see you soon!

Robot Ramen + Snack Bar in Osu

Today, my college mates and I went to the robot ramen shop called Famen, located in second floor of Ameyoko Bld. Ⅱ, located in Osu district. It's actually weird name for the robot ramen shop... But, their movement was pretty awesome! They even danced and showed us stand-up comedies. (They can talk!) It's crazy world, isn't it? Despite not funny jokes, the ramen itself was taste good, so we were fully satisfied ;) FYI, there is a sign, and it said the left one is the store manager, and the right one is the vice-store manager... hahaha

------------------------------

After we went to that ramen shop, we visited snack bar called Charlie's, where I have visited last month with Jess & Sean. It's really laid-back
atmosphere, so we had fun, and ate some kids snacks. Their spicy potato, and its spicy sauce taste really good.... The comedian owner told me which is made with Philippine's spice, so I must find one of these someday...!

Improv Everywhere

------------------------------

One of my friend told me about this channel, Improv Everywhere. It's hilarious! By the way, is this popular already? I just didn't know this, so I decided to make this post, for whom don't know about it. Their agents play prank on people in a public place. Amount of agent could be few, or few hundreds, it's depends of their mission. Their ideas are actually simple, which are like we sometimes think about, on the edge of our brains.

It's really fun to see the people's reaction. Basically it's just a fun, or silly, however they are also interesting from psychological point of view. I really like this channel, so if you have time, check out their channel and laugh!

Silkscreen Printing!

------------------------------

Yesterday and Today, I was working at Silkscreen lab in my university campus. I haven't used that lab for such a long time, so I forgot the way to print... Thanks to Kanako, and lab teacher, I learned again from the beginning, and I was able to complete my T-shirts for this weekends' Live Market! Emily also came to the lab today and created her live T-shirts, using my stamp designs. We still have a lot to create, but started to get excited instead of worrying about making new stuff! haha. So for those who don't have any plan for this weekends, visit Yaba park in front of the Loft building where the Live Market will be hold.

Climbing Mountain

I'm going to climb

Nana on the top of mountain

Pretending cool climber

cute squirrel

Funny squirrel says "I ate too much so I have stomachache."

Nana's cool packed lunch and my huge rice balls

Nice illustration poster says "We should clean the river."

------------------------------

I went to Kinka mountain with Nana, who is crazy artist, and my travel friend. That mountain itself is located near Gifu station, which is small and easy to clime, however it was really good time! Nature is good and beautiful as always. We pick up a lot of acorns, talk about old silly stories, and climbed the mountain. Of course I was feeling good. Beautiful views and clear air take my tiredness away. But of course I got muscle-ache next day, haha.

And we visited squirrel park where I had been taken by my parents when I was elementary school student. Squirrels looked kinda tired but they were cute. The lunch on the top of the mountain was awesome. I was bit surprised about that Nana could make nice packed lunch, they were all good. Thank you Nana.

I think I should be able to make nice food since I have decided to live by my self next year. And Next time we will climb bigger mountain, so if you are interested in, please let me know and join us!

HIV/AIDS Propaganda Poster

[AIDS is a mass murder]

------------------------------

This is HIV/AIDS propaganda poster created by German Design Agency. I found it through the Time magazine article. Their concept, the tag line is "AIDS is a mass murder", and they used Adolf Hitler's face. They also used other historical people who have bad reputation, Saddam Hussein and Joseph Stalin. TV commercial is also created.

And now, there are a lot of criticism about this campaign. Most of them have negative opinions: "It is probably possible to call HIV virus as Muss Murder Virus, however is it really good idea to use Hitler's face for this campaign?", "If you were HIV positive and saw this ad, what would you think?", "Do you call AIDS patients as Mass Murder, even though they were blood infection?", there are a lot more opinions from both sides. Commercial film seemed too aggressive, so it was removed from the YouTube.

In my opinion, it seems pretty bad to show these posters for the people who have already infected with HIV, but, I think it strongly works for the young generation. And today, every second, four people are dead by HIV virus in this planet, so I think this aggressive campaign is might be necessary and realistic compare to the "put the condom" advertisements. Despite a lot of negative opinions, having a lot of discussion itself is actually the most important thing for this kind of issue. Well, anyway, it would never published here in Japan, though. There are strict rules about advertisement, unfortunately.

You can check other posters and commercial film from the link below.

Information Graphics

------------------------------

Recently, somehow I've been quite tired. I don't know why. I was falling sleep, not put my contact lenses off, and woke up at 3 am. Then, I really wanted to drink 100% orange juice, so I went to convenience store near by my house, waring pajamas and my nerdy glasses, with strange hair style. It was feeling good to walk in the dark night, I could feel nice breeze. And morning orange juice was great even though not yet morning.

I went to College library today, read and researched for about 3 hours, and made bunch of copy. I actually hate my college, but found out its library is cool. I can find nice retro type specimen books, and English books there. Moreover, I like the silent atmosphere where I can really focus on what I need to do. There is no sound, at all. You can even here the sound of silence, bit like buzzing in my ears, which I like. I can only hear the sounds of me turning over the pages. It's bit cold, but probably my the most favorite spot in my college now.

------------------------------

I haven't decide concrete concept for my thesis work, but I decided to create information graphics using several media. Probably I use informational motion graphic as a main part, and also create a book about same topic. I posted some nice information graphics which I found during the research. Recently I'm interested in this site, called GOOD, their activity is quite interesting for me.

And the Internet Porn mograph is really fun to watch, and how they present statistics is hilarious! And of course that make sense. Statistics itself is also amazing, did you know that 226 porn sites are born every day in this planet!? haha, crazy. Someone told me that Internet connected world through the men's same interest: porn. Now I believe that. Computer, I mean, the Internet world is usually consider as "luck of human feeling", however this statistics kind of proves it's not that bad. haha

MTV Music Award Video

------------------------------

I found this MTV Music Video Award video, created by U.S. motion graphic firm
Prologue. I think it's really cool, very sharp, and edgy style which matches MTV identity. If you wanna know more detail, go to Motionographer link and read details. If itcreated in Japan, probably it'll be much more obvious style like, having huge typefaces with bright colors and says, MUSIC AWARD!!.. something like that. I like some Japanese ads, but about the movie motion graphics, the U.S. works are beyond the horizon.. I think we should learn more, not just designers, but also viewers.

wee see

[wee see]

------------------------------

Recently I had a lot of nice things and also a lot of bad things happening around me.. Maybe that's the reason of why I've been having headache? Maybe thinking too much? Hmm...

Anyway, my new life will begin from next april, and which is in Tokyo. Last week I was able to be there for my new job's info session. And it made me feel like it's time to work, and I felt that I aged. I think I'm old enough to be independent, so I have to be bit more matured, I guess. I had some time to meet some of my cool friend in Tokyo. Including Sean & Jess, cool photographer and designer, Yuki & Yasuko, sweet designer couple, and Yae, lovely ex-classmate who is my special person. Every time when I visit there I have great time, so I have to thank them heaps!

Today, I found short experimental movie works from
wee see website. (above) They are quite interesting because way too simple. But they are really fun to look at. So I think those are really nice example of knowing importance of the sound. And those works reminded me the video created by Designers Republic, Opto-Scientific, which I found from onedotzero Those are very simple and typographical approach and fun to look at. (Maybe you can enjoy playing both player at the sametime! haha)
