Yesterday, the deputy editor of BRUTUS Magazine, Yoshio Suzuki came to our university to give us a lecture. It was unusually-cool opportunity for us, because our campus is located in very countryside, and usually non of our professors are designer who is active at the forefront of the design world. Knowing a lot of real information from his office was fresh, and I was able to learn heaps.

Especially editing tips were quite helpful. For example, creating good categories, gather informations which have the same keyword, or juxtapose opposite/similar contents, and use numbering techniques. I have been knowing those ways of editing, but seeing his past works at the same time, I could fully understand what he wanted to say. Maybe it's time to read magazines with "editor's point of view" if I could do that, I think I can learn a lot at the bookstore.

And we got an opportunity to hang out with him at Izakaya, after his lecture, and we heard a lot of nice "behind the scene" of the special issues, and nice information about photography world. (He had wide knowledge of film camera as well!) So I was all ears. Drinking beer, eating chicken wings, and talking about design, equal priceless! haha, It was good time.

It is difficult to explain what is the "Brutus Magazine", because each issue has very different feature. However, that makes this magazine distinctive, and I think that's the good point of "Magazine". Each feature is very hot when it's published, even though publishers decided the topic about three months ago. Of course making one magazine takes a lot of time, but I was surprised about that fact.

And about myself, I'll be a freshman designer from next year, and I'm ready to be busy as bee, but I hope I can enjoy working, just like Suzuku professor said. I hope I can continue traveling (sometimes), even though I have busy job. And I should be gentleman, like him, in the future. haha

He introduced us the quote from the book,
The Territory of Conscience by Susan Sontag. I liked it, so I put here. (I hope my translation ability is enough to understand the main idea.)

"Move around. Go on a journey. Live abroad for a while. Never stop traveling. If impossible to go far away, dig deep into the place where you can break away from yourself. Even though, the time is disappearing, place is still there, and the place would make up for the time."
(Quote from "for young readers" section.)

Mr. Suzuki's "deputy editor's blog" is cool and good for design/magazine lover, so if you are, check it out from a link below. (Japanese only)
